1.    Pastry Cook: UNES/HSP/ARZ/PC/9/2017

    Location:  Nairobi

Contract Duration: Three Years

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Reporting to the Kitchen Supervisor, the incumbent shall be tasked with the following responsibilities:

  1. Diploma in Food Production or Hotel Management from a recognised institution
  2. Minimum three (3) years’ work experience as a Kitchen Supervisor or equivalent in a busy 3 to 4 star restaurant
  3. Ability to guide and supervise staff
  4. Must be conversant with food and beverage cost control and accountability
  5. Ability to generate daily kitchen reports
  6. Other certificates relevant to the job e. kitchen supervision will be an added advantage Computer literate
  7. KCSE Certificate
  8. Innovative and quality conscious
  9. Good food presentation skills
  10. Ability to work under pressure & long hours

JOB SPECIFICATION:

  1. Working with the Kitchen Supervisor to plan pastry menus, taking into consideration factors such as costs and special customer needs.
  2. Preparation and production of high quality pastry, cake, bread and exotic desserts
  3. Provision of efficient service of pastry orders and as per specifications
  4. Preparing of pastry products in adherence to standard recipes
  5. Maintaining high standards of hygiene and safety at work.
  6. To account for all production resources provided by the Kitchen Supervisor and issued from the stores
  7. Proper handling and use of kitchen pastry equipment as provided for by the Head cook and the Manufacturer.
  8. Provision of world class customer service to the customers.
  9. Any other duty assigned by the Head cook.

 

2.      Barista: UNES/HSP/ARZ/BRT/9/2017 –TWO POSITIONS

    Location:  Nairobi

Contract Duration: One Year

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Reporting to the Food and Beverage Supervisor, the incumbent shall be tasked with the following responsibilities:

  1. Taking customer orders, brewing and service of a wide selection of coffee drinks and other hot beverages
  2. Provision of satisfactory customer relations
  3. Up-sell the various types of coffee, tea, beverage recipes and other restaurant products
  4. Promoting coffee and other beverages provided by the restaurant
  5. Prompt requisitioning and accountability of beverage stocks issues and sales
  6. Maintaining high hygienic and safety standards within the restaurant
  7. Proper handling and maintenance of coffee operating equipment
  8. Advising management through your immediate supervisor on enhancement of the business and new innovations
  9. Any other duties assigned by your supervisor.

JOB SPECIFICATION:

  1. Must have undergone a barista training program. Training in making espresso drinks and late art is a mandatory requirement
  2. Certificate in food and beverage sales and service
  3. Two (2) years’ experience as a barista in an upscale coffee shop or restaurant
  4. Ability to provide accurate measurement and mixing of ingredients to produce consistent quality of beverages
  5. Must be a person of high integrity
  6. Good customer service skills
  7. Ability to multitask in the preparation of different types of drinks (hot and cold) as per clients order
  8. Computer literate

1. Introduction

University of Nairobi Enterprises and Services (UNES) Limited in collaboration with The Library Department will be running Short Course Training from 21st to 23rd June 2017 on the following topics:-

1) AUTOMATED REFERENCING SYSTEM to be conducted on 21st June 2017
2) PLAGIARISM AND THE USE OF TURNITIN DETECTION SOFTWARE to be conducted on 22nd June 2017
3) PUBLISHING IN HIGH IMPACT JOURNALS to be conducted on 23rd June 2017
2. Target audience
 The course targets Researchers, Academics, and Postgraduate students, Librarians, Authors and Managers.

3. Course Background

The emergences of automated citation and referencing software have now made it easier for all those who venture into scholarly writing. Writing and presenting quality academic papers take time. There are diverse online open source software that make citation and referencing a bliss. There is therefore need for researchers and scholars to have the requisite search and citation skills for effective research output and adherence to academic integrity.

Plagiarism is considered a major academic malpractice, therefore the Automated Referencing and Plagiarism Detection short course training, is aimed at addressing the vice. The short course also intends to build the capacity of the participants in terms of equipping them with necessary skills to effectively cite to avoid plagiarism.

Publish or perish holds true in most research and academic environments, but a single publication in a high impact journal can make a huge impact on one’s academic career path. The course will equip researchers and postgraduate students on writing skills and on how to publish in high impact journals and books

4. Objectives of the short course training are to
1) Equip participants with citing and referencing skills using Zotero and Mendeley Bibliographic Management software
2) Train participants on how to use Turnitin to detect plagiarism.
3) Enhance academic writing.
4) Equip participants on how to publish in high impact commercial and open access journals and books

5. Learning outcomes:

At the end of the short course training, the participants should:

1) Download, install and use Zotero and Mendeley to cite and reference their work.
2) Produce quality scholarly write-ups.
3) Publish scholarly articles and book chapters in high impact journals and books

Course structure:

The training will cover the following broad thematic areas: Zotero, Mendeley, Turnitin and publishing in high impact journals.

Mode of instruction:

Presentations will be delivered through PowerPoint presentations, interactive sessions and practical. Participants will be required to have an internet enabled computer.

Duration:

1) The course will take place from 21st to 23rd June 2017.
2) Participants can select to attend any or all of the three courses.

Venue: Computer Lab, Jomo Kenyatta Memorial Library, UoN.

Cost: Ksh. 7,000 per course (Including Meals)
